How to keep your water data secure in a cloud-first world

When deploying advanced systems such as the virtual operator, with its increasing importance for our primary processes, we need to consider security from the beginning – the Security by Design approach. International standards, like IEC 62443 & ISO 27001, and best practices, like OWASP, can be very helpful in securing the systems within the plant. However, security awareness – with everyone involved in the operation – and Security by Design, in all asset management processes, are crucial to embed security into the architecture, code, processes and people.

Level-based control of the influent flow causes peak discharges at a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) after rainfall events. Furthermore, the capacity of the post-treatment is in general smaller than the maximum hydraulic capacity of the WWTP. This results in a significant bypass of the post-treatment during peak discharge. The optimisation of influent flow reduces peak discharge, and increases the treatment efficiency of the whole water cycle, which benefits the surface water quality. In this paper, it is shown that half of the bypasses of the post-treatment can be prevented by predictive control. A predictive controller for influent flow is implemented using the Aquasuite® Advanced Monitoring and Control platform. Based on real-time measured water levels in the sewerage and both rainfall and dry-weather flow (DWF) predictions, a discharge limitation is determined by a volume optimisation technique. For the analysed period (February–September 2016) results at WWTP Bennekom show that about 50 % of bypass volume can be prevented. Analysis of single rainfall events shows that the used approach is still conservative and that the bypass can be even further decreased by allowing discharge limitation during precipitation.

In de afvalwaterketen kan droogtevoorspelling veel opleveren. Niet alleen een betere benutting van investeringen, maar ook een hoger zuiveringsrendement - zonder nadelige gevolgen voor de riolering. Dit principe wordt toegepast in vier pilots van Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe bij rwzi’s met een nageschakeld zandfilter: Woudenberg, Ede, Bennekom en Harderwijk.

Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe heeft de intentie uitgesproken in het jaar 2025 energieneutraal te zijn. Voor de zuiveringen van het waterschap is de hoeveelheid energie en chemicaliën (nodig voor het bereiken van de gewenste effluentkwaliteit) vooral afhankelijk van de hoeveelheid en samenstelling van de aanvoer van de zuivering. Voor de beluchting en retourslib, de meest energie-intensieve processen van de zuivering, selecteerde waterschap Vallei en Veluwe de Aquasuite® PURE oplossing van Royal HaskoningDHV.

Real time kwaliteitgestuurde drinkwaterbereiding met SLIMM

De kwaliteit en betrouwbaarheid van het drinkwater is hèt toetsingscriterium voor de waterleidingbedrijven. Paradoxaal genoeg wordt dit toetsingscriterium niet of nauwelijks gebruikt voor de processturing van waterzuiveringen. SLIMM (Self Learning Integrated Model-based Management) heeft technieken met soft sensoren ontwikkeld waarmee bij drinkwaterbereiding kosteneffectief en real time op kwaliteit gestuurd kan worden. De procesdata die de sensoren registreren worden bewerkt via een model. De uitkomsten van deze bewerking worden overzichtelijk gepresenteerd op een dashboard. IT applications should lead to better water quality, lower environmental impact and more efficient management, control, monitoring and maintenance of water systems, infrastructure and water treatment processes. Due to fast communication and new ways of personal interaction with stakeholders and customers, IT applications will not only support the water sector in carrying out its primary tasks but also in its communication with customers and stakeholders.
